Do not tune a car without one. Writing a file takes minutes with the ignition on and the engine off, and if the voltage drops mid-write the ECU can be left with half a file in it. A battery support unit holds the voltage steady for as long as the write takes.
Every dealer, every write. It is the cheapest insurance in the workshop.
